Fabian Gerard Joseph (born December 5, 1965 in Sydney , Nova Scotia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach . During his active career he played mainly in the American Hockey League and International Hockey League as well as internationally with Team Canada . At both the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , he won the silver medal with the Canadian national team . Since 2007 Joseph has been the assistant coach of the Moncton Wildcats from the Québec Major Junior Hockey League .
Career
Joseph first spent his junior years with the Victoria Cougars from the Western Hockey League , where he collected 228 scorer points in 153 games between 1982 and 1984 . As a result, he was selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the sixth round in 109th place. Before moving to the professional field, the striker initially joined another junior team in the summer of 1984. He went on the ice in the 1984/85 season for the Toronto Marlboros from the Ontario Hockey League . In 60 encounters he came to 75 points for the Marlboros.
To switch to the professional field, Joseph decided to play for the Canadian ice hockey association Hockey Canada from 1985 . The center represented this in international appearances until 1987 without playing for another team. It was not until the beginning of the 1987/88 season that Joseph was signed by the Edmonton Oilers franchise from the National Hockey League . For their farm team Nova Scotia Oilers he ran on in the American Hockey League . The following two years until 1990 for the Cape Breton Oilers after the team had changed its location. For the Oilers' farm team, he had 235 missions and 228 points over the three years.
In the summer of 1990, the attacker left the organization of the NHL team and moved to Europe . There he joined the EV Brunico from the Italian Serie A on. The 1990/91 season - also his only one in Italy - he finished with 84 points in 36 games and was the top scorer of the Wolves who just avoided relegation to Serie B.
Joseph then returned to Hockey Canada and began preparing intensively for the ice hockey tournament of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , France , from the summer of 1991 . There he got two goals and one assist in eight tournament games. In the semifinals against Czechoslovakia , he was involved in two of the four Canadian goals. In the final, however, the team lost to the United Team with 1: 3 and won the silver medal. After a brief stint at EHC Chur in the Swiss National League A in the 1992/93 season , Joseph soon returned to Hockey Canada. Once again, the preparation started on the ice hockey tournament of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway Lillehammer early. The striker was the captain of the Olympic team, which again won silver. In the final it was inferior to Sweden in the penalty shootout . The attacker prepared two goals during the tournament.
After the Winter Olympics ended, the Canadian returned to North America. He moved to the Milwaukee Admirals from the International Hockey League , which he remained loyal to until the spring of 1996. After 184 IHL games with 71 points, he ended his active career and took on an assistant coach position with the Admirals for the 1996/97 season . In 2000 he filled this post for one year with the Halifax Mooseheads in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League , before becoming head coach of the Dalhousie University ice hockey team between 2001 and 2007 , which is part of Atlantic University Sport , a league of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport , were at home, was. Since 2007 he has been assistant coach for the Moncton Wildcats from the Québec Major Junior Hockey League under head coach Danny Flynn .
