Marko Kristian Kiprusoff (born June 6, 1972 in Turku ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and current coach who has worked for the Montréal Canadiens and the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League and for TPS Turku in the SM -liiga played in the position of defender . His younger brother Miikka Kiprusoff is also an ice hockey player and was a goalkeeper in the National Hockey League for many years .
Career
Kiprusoff began his career in the 1990/91 season with the Finnish club TPS Turku . During the NHL Entry Draft in 1994 , he was selected by those in charge of the Montreal Canadiens in the third round at a total of 70th position. The left shooter stayed, after a brief interlude during the 1991/92 season with league rivals HPK Hämeenlinna until 1995 at TPS Turku. He then moved to the National Hockey League for the Montréal Canadiens , which initially gave him to the then farm team , the Fredericton Canadiens . Nevertheless, he completed 24 NHL games in which he was able to achieve four assists . Since he could not prevail in the NHL with the Canadiens, he then returned to Europe and joined the Malmö Redhawks , who were then active in the Swedish top division, the Elitserien . The trained defender stayed there for two years and was one of the most successful defensive players on the team during this time. In 100 games in which he was used, he scored 51 points scorer.
After he refused a contract extension, he signed a contract with his hometown club TPS Turku in the summer of 1998. There he was able to increase his points yield again and thus attracted the interest of several clubs from other European top leagues. Thus it was the management of the Kloten Flyers from the Swiss National League A who convinced him of a commitment and transferred to Switzerland for the 2000/01 season . During the following season, which he again spent at HC TPS Turku, he got a contract offer from the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League. Kiprusoff decided to change and consequently went on the ice for the Islanders. The then 29-year-old was again unable to assert himself there and was often part of the farm team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from the AHL. In the end, he completed 27 games for the New York Islanders, in which he was able to achieve six assists and four penalty minutes.
His contract was not renewed at the end of the 2001/02 season and so he moved to the Kloten Flyers, for whom he had already played between 2000 and 2001. He was under contract with the Flyers for two years and then returned to TPS Turku in the summer of 2004, where he was active until 2009.
He ended his playing career in April 2010, but returned to the ice in January 2011 and played a game for the Finnish club Kuusamon Pallokarhut (PaKa) before he was signed by the Budapest Stars two weeks later . Between 2012 and 2014 he was active again for PaKa and KooKoo before finally ending his career in 2014.
He then became a junior coach at TPS before he was appointed assistant coach to the TPS professional team in the middle of the 2014/15 season. Between 2015 and 2018 he held the same position at TuTo Hockey , a second-rate club also from Turku.
