John Porter (ice hockey player)

John Chester "Red" "Jack" Porter (born January 21, 1904 in Beckwith , Ontario , † August 6, 1997 in Toronto , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach . At the Olympic Winter Games in 1928 , he won the gold medal as a member of the Canadian national team.

Career

John Porter began his career as a hockey player at the age of 17 with a team in the junior league of the Ontario Hockey Association . From 1926 to 1928 he played for the Toronto Varsity Grads, with whom he won the Allan Cup , the Canadian amateur championship, in 1927 . The following year he represented Canada with the Varsity Grads at the Winter Olympics. Following the tournament, he was the head coach of the senior team at the University of Toronto from 1928 to 1931 .

International

For Canada , Porter took part in the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , where he and his team won the gold medal. At the Winter Games he was the team captain of Canada. He was also the standard bearer for the Canadian winter sports enthusiasts at the opening ceremony.
