Pavel Patera (born September 6, 1971 in Kladno , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who was active for many years at HC Kladno and has also played 32 games for the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League . He has been under contract with BK Mladá Boleslav as an assistant coach since 2018 .

Career

Pavel Patera began his career in his hometown Kladno with HC Poldi Kladno, where he made his debut in the top division of Czechoslovakia, the 1st division , in the 1990/91 season . He played for his home club until 1996 and improved his game from year to year. In two consecutive seasons he was top scorer of the Czech extra league founded in 1993 .

In the summer of 1996 he and his strike partners at Kladno and in the Czech national team, Martin Procházka and Otakar Vejvoda , moved to Sweden for the Elitserien at AIK Stockholm . Procházka moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs a year later , while Vejvoda had to end his career at the beginning of the 1997/98 season due to an injury. In the 1998 NHL Entry Draft , Patera was selected by the Dallas Stars in the sixth round in 153rd place. However, he did not move to North America, but returned to the Czech Republic for HC Vsetín and won the Czech championship with Vsetín .

After a season for Vsetín, he signed a contract with the Dallas Stars , but completed only twelve games for the Stars and returned to Vsetín. Before the 2000/01 season he moved to the Minnesota Wild , but was released after 20 games for the Wild to the Cleveland Lumberjacks , who played in the IHL .

Since his attempts to gain a foothold in North America were largely unsuccessful, he decided to return to Europe. He first played three games for his hometown club HC Kladno before moving to the Russian first division club HK Awangard Omsk . He played for Omsk for three years and won the Russian championship with Awangard in 2004 . After this success he returned to his home club, for which he played until 2014 with one exception. At the end of the 2005/06 season , Kladno missed the playoffs and Patera was loaned by the Swedish first division club Färjestad BK , for whom he played 26 games and won the Swedish championship .

From 2007 Patera acted as team captain at Kladno and, despite his age, was always one of the team's top scorers.

In 2014 he moved again within the Extraliga to HC Olomouc , for which he played 65 more games. He ended his career in June 2015 at the age of 43.

International

Pavel Patera made his debut on April 16, 1994 in Augsburg for the Czech national team and took part in all major international championships in the following years. With the national team, he won four gold and two bronze medals at world championships . The greatest success of his career was winning the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano . He played his last international game on September 7, 2003 in Pardubice as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2002/03 .
