The HK Awangard Omsk ( Russian ХК Авангард Омск ) is a Russian ice hockey club founded in 1950 from the Siberian city of Omsk . The team plays in the Continental Hockey League (KHL) and plays its home games in the Balaschicha Arena in the 2018/19 season . The club colors are red, white and black.
history
The club was founded in 1950 as Spartak Omsk , later also called Aeroflot Omsk , Kautschuk Omsk , Chimik Omsk and Schinnik Omsk , before it was finally renamed Awangard in 1981 . The club is financed by the Russian oil company Gazprom Neft and the Omsk Oblast .
Omsk took part in the first two events of the IIHF Continental Cup in 1997 and 1998 . During the lockout in the 2004/05 season , the club caused a sensation by signing NHL top star Jaromír Jágr . Despite the commitment of the Czech in 2004, the championship title won for the first time in the previous season could not be defended.
At the first IIHF European Champions Cup 2005 in Saint Petersburg , Awangard took first place. In 2007 the club moved to the newly built Omsk Arena , which can seat 10,318 spectators.
In August 2018, cracks were discovered in the foundation of the building during construction work on the Omsk Arena . This led to an immediate evacuation and permanent closure of the building. Awangard Omsk then decided to play his home games in Balashicha ( Moscow Oblast ), 2,500 km away, in the Balashicha Arena after the club had excluded other venues such as the new arena in Krasnoyarsk . Due to this move of the team, the schedule of the KHL had to be adjusted.
