Gennadi Fjodorowitsch Zygurow ( Russian Геннадий Фёдорович Цыгуров ; born April 15, 1942 in Chelyabinsk Russian SFSR ; † December 14, 2016 in Tolyatti ) was a Russian - Soviet ice hockey player and coach . His sons Denis and Dmitri were also ice hockey players; Denis passed away in January 2015.

Career

Gennady Zygurow ran as a hockey player from 1960 to 1977 for the HK tractor Chelyabinsk in the top Soviet league. He came to 47 goals in 658 games.

From 1977 Zygurow worked as a trainer. First he was assistant coach at Traktor Chelyabinsk before he was appointed head coach for the 1978/79 season. Until 1984 he looked after the tractor team before becoming head coach of the SK. Uritskogo was Kazan . In 1987 he returned to Traktor Chelyabinsk and worked there until 1990. In 1988 he won the bronze medal at the U18 European Junior Championships as head coach of the Soviet U18 juniors .

Between 1990 and 2000 Zygurow was the head coach of HK Lada Tolyatti and during this time he achieved the greatest successes of his career: in 1994 and 1996 he won the International Hockey League with Lada and in 1997 the European Cup. In addition, Lada won the IHL Cup in 1994 under his leadership. Parallel to his club activities, he was assistant coach of the Russian national team in the 1995/96 season and between 1998 and 2000.

In 1999, Zygurow led the U20 national team of Russia as head coach to the world championship title in the under-20 age group. Between 2000 and 2002 he was then under contract at HK Awangard Omsk and was with Awangard 2001 Russian runner-up. In the 2002/03 season he was in charge of Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod from the Vysschaya League and won the league championship with this at the end of the season. This success was synonymous with promotion to the Russian super league .

Two years later, Zygurow repeated these successes when he reached both the championship of the second division and promotion to the super league with the HK MWD Tver . He then returned as head coach to Traktor Chelyabinsk, with whom he also made promotion to the Super League in 2006.

Further stations were Kristall Saratow and Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk . In September 2010 he was signed by the Kazakh club HK Sary-Arka Karaganda .

Zygurow was diagnosed with cancer in 2014 and died in Tolyatti in December 2016.
