Pauli Jaks (born January 25, 1972 in Schaffhausen ) is a former Swiss ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach . During his playing career he played for HC Ambri-Piotta , the SCL Tigers and Geneve-Servette HC in the Swiss National League A . On January 29, 1995 Jaks wrote Swiss ice hockey history when he was the first player to be trained in Switzerland to play in the North American National Hockey League . Since the end of his career he has been a goalkeeper coach for the youth teams of the Swiss Ice Hockey Association and the HC Sierre from the National League B operates. His older brother Peter was also a professional ice hockey player and worked for HC Ambrì-Piotta for many years.

Career

After yaks, the youth division of HC Ambri-Piotta had gone through, he played from the 1989/90 season when HC Ambri-Piotta in the National League A . Initially as a substitute for Brian Daccord , from the 1990/91 season on as a regular goalkeeper. After outstanding performances at the Junior World Championship in Canada in 1991 , the scouts of the National Hockey League also noticed the Swiss goalkeeper, who emulated Patrick Roy in his style of play . So who elected him Los Angeles Kings in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft off at 108th position in the fifth round. Jaks stayed in Ambrì for two more years and was named best goalkeeper of the NLA season in spring 1992 before moving to North America .

In his first season there, the Kings put him in their farm team , the Phoenix Roadrunners , in the International Hockey League , where he shared the goalkeeping post with Rick Knickle and David Goverde . In the following season, his ice ages decreased significantly behind Byron Dafoe and Mike O'Neill . However, Jaks wrote Swiss ice hockey history on January 29, 1995 when he was the first player to be trained in Switzerland to play in the National Hockey League . In the dress of the Los Angeles Kings he replaced Jamie Storr between the posts against the Chicago Blackhawks after the first third break and played 40 minutes in goal. He had to accept two goals.

However, this one mission remained until the end of the season and so Pauli Jaks returned to HC Ambrì-Piotta in Switzerland in the summer of 1995. There he was immediately promoted to the goalkeeper again and made the leap into the Swiss national team . Overall, the goalkeeper stayed in Ambrì until the summer of 2004. He lived with the club in 1998 and 1999, the most successful period of the same in recent history, when it was possible to celebrate twice winning the IIHF Continental Cup and the Swiss runner-up. In addition, in August 1999, the team was crowned the most successful club team in Europe by winning the IIHF Super Cup .

In the summer of 2004 Jaks dared to move abroad again and was signed by the reigning Russian champion HK Awangard Omsk from the super league . Jaks was the third goalkeeper behind the Canadian Norm Maracle and the Russian Maxim Sokolow , whereupon he left the club after only eight appearances in the Superliga and one in the third-rate Pervaya League and returned to Switzerland. Since the HCAP had no need for a goalkeeper, Jaks joined the SCL Tigers , which he helped to stay in the NLA in the playdowns . His last professional season he spent at HC Forward-Morges in the National League B .

After the end of his active career, Jaks dedicated himself specifically to the promotion of young talent and has been a goalkeeping coach for the youth teams of the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation since 2006 and for the professional club HC Sierre from the National League B since 2009 .

International

Jaks first played at the 1990 European Junior Championships for Switzerland . He made further appearances in the junior sector at the Junior World Championships in 1991 and 1992 . His achievements in 1991, when Jaks saved the promoted team from relegation again, were rewarded with the nomination as the best goalkeeper of the tournament and the election to the All-Star team. A year later he did not manage to prevent relegation to the B group.

In the senior sector, Jaks had his only appearance in the B World Cup in 1996 , when Switzerland was promoted back to the A group. At the World Championships in 1999 and 2000 , he acted as a substitute and remained without missions. The keeper played a total of 38 international matches for the Swiss national team.
