Career

Verchota attended Duluth East High School , where she played football and ice hockey successfully . In both sports he was named to the high school all-state first team. After graduating, he went to the University of Minnesota , where he decided against football and played exclusively for the ice hockey team. In the period from 1976 to 1979 he was used in 161 games for the Golden Gophers, scoring 59 goals and giving 61 assists. Under the coach Herb Brooks , he won the national college championship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1976 and 1979. At the 1979 World Cup in Moscow he was part of the USA team for the first time, which finished seventh. A year later he was at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid to the team trained by Herb Brooks, which defeated the USSR in the final round and then became Olympic champion. Verchota scored three goals and two assists in the seven games. In the last game of the final group, he laid the foundation for the necessary point gain with his 2-2 equalization against Finland.

After the Olympic victory, he turned down an offer from the Minnesota North Stars , who had drafted him in 1976 , and played a season in Finland with Jokerit Helsinki . He also played for the US team at the 1981 World Cup in Gothenburg before taking a year off from ice hockey and concentrating on his studies. He then returned to the US national team and helped the United States, who had previously been relegated from the A group, to the title at the 1983 B World Cup and the associated return to the A group. In 1984 he led the US players at the Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo as team captain , but where they only finished seventh.

Then Verchota ended his ice hockey career and worked as a bank clerk. He is a member of the 1980 Olympic team, inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and the United States Olympic Hall of Fame.
