Career

Chris Lee began his career as a hockey player in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League , where he was active between 1996 and 2000 for the Orillia Terriers, Couchiching Terriers and Parry Sound Shamrocks. He then attended the State University of New York at Potsdam for four years , for whose ice hockey team he played in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .

After he was not included in the NHL Entry Draft , the defender moved to the professional field after completing his studies. Lee joined the Florida Everblades from the ECHL for three seasons . In the 2006/07 season he also gained his first experience in the higher-class American Hockey League , in which he was on the ice for the Albany River Rats , Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights . For the 2007/08 season , the Canadian finally received his first full AHL contract and played for the Iowa Stars for a year . In the following two seasons he was also limited to one year for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the AHL.

In the summer of 2010 - without the chance of being involved with a team from the National Hockey League - the defender moved to Europe and was signed by the Kölner Haien from the German Ice Hockey League for the 2010/11 season . In the 2011/12 season he played for league competitor Adler Mannheim , with whom he became German runner-up. In addition, he was named the best defender of the DEL after he had collected the most scorer points during the season in his position with 45 . Nevertheless, Lee left the Adler and moved to Sweden to Färjestad BK in the Elitserien in summer 2012 . There he scored 53 points scorer in 64 games of the season in the following season, which made him the highest point defender of the Elitserien.

He then moved to another club in the summer of 2013. It drew the defender to HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Continental Hockey League . With Metallurg Lee won the KHL championship trophy , the Gagarin Cup, at the end of the 2013/14 season . The Canadian repeated this success with the team two years later, in which he played a decisive role as the defender with the highest points in the playoffs and the scorer of the decisive goal in the final series. With well over 100 points scorer in his first three KHL seasons, Lee increased his yield to 65 points in the 2016/17 game year . In addition, there were another 21 points in the playoffs.

After his contract expired in the summer of 2017, Lee's performance in the KHL over the previous years finally drew the attention of the NHL franchises to his attention. He initially did not sign a new contract in Magnitogorsk, which meant that he missed the start of the 2017/18 KHL season and a little later received a trial contract from the Los Angeles Kings . With the Kings, however, he did not get a permanent engagement, so he returned to Metallurg.

After Lee had already participated in the Germany Cup with Team Canada in 2012 and 2016 , he was appointed to the squad of the Canadian national team for the first time for the 2017 World Cup in Germany and France . There he won the silver medal with the team after a final defeat against Sweden , for which he contributed two assists in seven tournament appearances.

The following year he also represented his home country at the 2018 Winter Olympics , where he won the bronze medal with the team that competed without NHL players.
