Career
Thommie Bergman began his career as an ice hockey player at IF Karlskoga / Bofors , for whose professional team he was initially active in the second Swedish division from 1964 to 1968. After promotion to Division 1, he played for the team for a year before he played for league rivals Södertälje SK for two years . In the 1971/72 season, the defender scored nine goals and nine assists in 26 games for Västra Frölunda IF and was elected to the Swedish All-Star Team. He then received a free agent contract with the Detroit Red Wings , where he was the first player to learn ice hockey in Europe. At the Red Wings he was able to prevail right away and scored 21 scorer points in 75 games, including nine goals , in his rookie year , the 1972/73 season . In the following season he was no longer so often for the Red Wings on the ice and was given for eight games to their farm team Virginia Wings from the American Hockey League . In December 1974 the Swede was sold by Detroit to the Winnipeg Jets , for which he scored 132 scorer points in 247 games over the next three and a half years in the World Hockey Association, which competed with the NHL .
In March 1978 Bergman returned as a free agent to the Detroit Red Wings and had in the following year and a quarter again a regular place in the NHL. He lost this in the 1979/80 season , in which he was only 28 times for Detroit on the ice, while he played 14 games for Detroit's new AHL farm team Adirondack Red Wings . For the 1980/81 season , the former national player returned to his Swedish homeland, where he received a contract with his ex-club Västra Frölunda IF from the Elitserien . He spent the following two years with another former team, Södertälje SK, for which he was active in the now second-class Division 1 during this period. After advancing to the Elitserien in 1983, he ended his active career at the age of 33.
Immediately after the end of his career, he took over as head coach for the second division HV 71 Jönköping for the 1983/84 season . From 1985 to 1987 he was in charge of Västra Frölunda HC, for which he had previously played twice as a player.
