Severomuysk ( Russian Северомуйск ) is an urban-type settlement in the autonomous Republic of Buryatia ( Russia ) with 2,198 inhabitants (14 October 2010).
geography
The settlement is located in the valley of the Mujakan , a left tributary of the Muja , which separates the Northern Muja Mountains (Severomuisk Mountains) in the north from the Mujakan Mountains in the south. The two mountain ranges in this area, about 2300 meters high, belong to the system of the Stanowoi Highlands . Severomuisk is located about 620 kilometers (as the crow flies) northeast of the republic capital Ulan-Ude .
The settlement belongs to the Muiski Rajons and is a good 90 kilometers to the southwest from its administrative center Taksimo .
history
The place was created in connection with the construction of the Baikal Amur Mainline (BAM) from the mid-1970s. A few kilometers to the north, work began on the 15-kilometer-long Severomuisk tunnel . In 1977 the place was given urban-type settlement status.
Since the completion of the tunnel was delayed by almost 20 years until 2001, contrary to the original plans, Severomuisk remained the logistical center of the tunnel construction longer than planned. When work came to a standstill in the 1990s as a result of the economic crisis due to a lack of funding, almost two thirds of the residents left the place.

Economy and Infrastructure
Practically the only economic factor is the location on the Baikal-Amur main line (line kilometer 1385 from Taischet ), the maintenance of the Severomuisk tunnel and the 60 kilometer long branching north of the station, leading over the pass of the Severomuisk mountains and also after completion of the tunnel operated bypass route.
The road following the BAM also leads through the village.
