The Muja ( Russian Муя ) is a 365-kilometer-long left tributary of the Vitim in Eastern Siberia ( Russia , Asia ).
course
The Muja rises at an altitude of about 1700 m on the southern flank of the Northern Muja Mountains (Severomuisker Gebirge), which is almost 2500 m high and , like the entire area crossed by the river, belongs to the system of the Stanowoi Highlands . It flows in a predominantly north-easterly direction through an initially wide, wooded valley, which separates the southern Muja Mountains (Yuzhnomuisk Mountains) from the northern Muja Mountains or, in the middle reaches, from the Mujakan Mountains. The latter forms the watershed between the Muja and its most important, left tributary, the Mujakan . Above its confluence, the valley of the Muja is narrower than in the upper reaches.
The Muja then reaches the relatively flat Muja-Kuanda sink , an in west-east direction over about 100 kilometers north-south-direction of about 50 kilometers, extending sink and flows through this to the mouth of the Lena creek Vitim in The village of Ust-Muja (also Tolmachevsky ) at an altitude of 467 m . The largest and only place on the river next to Ust-Muja is Taksimo .
The Muja gave its name to a number of geographical objects, such as the mountains mentioned, but also the administrative unit through which it flows in the entire course, the Rajon Muiski (Muja-Rajon) of the autonomous Republic of Buryatia .
Hydrography
The catchment area of the Muja covers 11,900 km². Near the mouth, the river is over 200 meters wide and 2 meters deep; the flow velocity is 0.8 m / s.
The water flow at Taksimo, 72 kilometers above the estuary, is an annual average of 113 m³ / s with a minimum of 19.9 m³ / s in March and a maximum of 344 m³ / s in June.
Infrastructure and economy
The Muja is navigable for smaller vehicles for 70 kilometers from Taksimo to the mouth.
The river is rich in trout fishing , as Taimen ( Hucho taimen ), Arctic mullet ( Thymallus arcticus ) Tugun ( Coregonus tugun ) and further Maränenarten .
The area through which the Muja flows in the upper and middle reaches is practically uninhabited. Below the confluence of the Mujakan, the Baikal-Amur-Magistrale (BAM) and the road following the railway cross the river for about 20 kilometers to Taksimo on the right-hand side near it.
