Kabansk ( Russian Кабанск ) is a village (selo) in Buryatia ( Siberia , Russia ) on the left bank of the Selenga River southeast of Lake Baikal , at the foot of the Chamar-Daban Mountains. It has 6038 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
The place is about 120 km northwest of the republic capital Ulan-Ude .
Kabansk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name . The area of the Rajons is 13,470 km²; it lies at 456 to 1400 m above sea level. NN. The climate is continental with 400–450 mm (in the mountains up to 1400 mm) precipitation.
Kabansk was founded in 1660 as a winter camp for the Cossacks advancing to the east , and in 1692 it was fortified as an ostrog on the once well-known tea road .
