Kamensk ( Russian Ка́менск ; Buryat Хаамин , Chaamin ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Buryatia ( Russia ) with 7,160 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is a good 70 km as the crow flies west-northwest of the republic capital Ulan-Ude at the northern foot of the Chamar-Daban Mountains. It is located about 10 km from the left bank of the Selenga and a good 25 km from the east bank of Lake Baikal .
Kamensk belongs to the Kabansky Rajon and is about 10 km to the southwest from its administrative seat Kabansk . It is the seat of the municipality of Kamenskoye gorodskoje posselenije, which includes the Kamensk settlement, the Timljui village and the Gorny settlement.
history
The place was created in the 1940s in connection with the construction of a cement factory. On October 5, 1949, it was given the name Kamensk and urban-type settlement status.

The Trans-Siberian Railway runs north of Kamensk ; The Timljui station is located just under 3 km northeast of the town center at kilometer 5543 from Moscow . The railway line follows the M55 trunk road to the north , which connects Irkutsk with Chita and is part of the transcontinental road link.
