Viktor Petrovich Savinych ( Russian Виктор Петрович Савиных , scientific transliteration Viktor Petrovič Savinych ; born March 7, 1940 in Berjoskiny , Kirov Oblast , Russian SFSR ) is an engineer and former Soviet cosmonaut .
Life
Viktor Savinych graduated from the Moscow College of Geodesy, Aerial Photography and Cartography in 1969 as an engineer . The State Intermediate Commission selected him as a cosmonaut in consultation with NPO Energija . Sawinych made his first flight as a flight engineer of the sixth regular crew of Salyut 6 ; its feeder spaceship was the Soyuz T-4 . After he received his doctorate in 1985 as a candidate in technical sciences , Savinych flew as a member of the fourth regular crew with Soyuz T-13 to the Salyut 7 space station , where he again held the post of flight engineer. On August 2, 1985, he installed a fifth and sixth solar cell at the station during a five-hour outboard activity . Savinych returned to Earth with Soyuz T-14 . He made his last space flight in 1988 with Soyuz TM-5 again as a flight engineer. Viktor Savinych resigned from the cosmonaut corps on September 9, 1989.
Sawinych is the author of a number of textbooks, monographs and articles dealing with issues relating to remote sensing of the earth from the cosmos. He also wrote popular science books on the cosmos and is a member of the Writers' Union. In 1990 Sawinych qualified as a doctor of technical sciences . From 1988 to 2007 he was rector of the University of Geodesy, Aerial Photography and Cartography in Moscow , which under his leadership was elevated to the University of Geodesy and Cartography . Since 2007 he has been its president . He is also the President of the Association of Russian Universities.
He is an honorary citizen of the cities of Kaluga , Perm and Kirov ( Russia ), Sheqazghan ( Kazakhstan ), Ulan Bator and Darchan (both Mongolia ).
On July 21, 2005, the asteroid (6890) Savinykh was named after him.
Savinych is married and has one child.
