Mission overview

See main article Salyut 7 EO-4

Wasjutin, Savinych and Volkov were originally intended to be the fourth long-term crew of Salyut 7. Since the station failed completely, Soyuz T-13 first dispatched a repair team with Dschanibekow and Savinych, who were able to put the station back into operation.

When the space station was functional again, Wasjutin and Volkov followed, accompanied by Grechko. Grechko led Soyuz T-13 back to earth together with Janibekov, so that the originally intended crew was now on board.

One goal of the mission was the docking of Kosmos 1686 , a modified TKS spaceship , with Salyut 7. This happened on October 2nd, which greatly increased the size of the space station. Kosmos 1686 had 4,500 kg of supplies on board, including an extendable mast that was to be mounted on the outside of the station. From mid-October, Vasyutin began to feel weaker and more uncomfortable. Another goal of practicing work in space for the upcoming Mir space station could no longer be achieved because of the worsening clinical picture of Wasjutin. The cosmonauts returned to Earth on November 21st. Instead of the planned six months, the mission lasted only 64 days, and important experiments and experiments for the Mir could not be carried out.
