Kosmos 1001 is a code name for the first unmanned test flight of the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 7K-ST . It was customary in the Soviet Union to give official names only to successful missions. Failed flights were mostly not announced at all and test flights were only announced under the general cover name Kosmos .

Mission overview

This was the first test flight of a new Soyuz spaceship of the type 7K-ST (Soyuz-T), which was to serve as a feeder ship for the Salyut stations. It was based on the Soyuz 7K-S type, which was intended for autonomous military flights but was never used. After three orbit maneuvers, the spaceship re-entered the earth's atmosphere on April 15, 1978. The flight was rated as a failure.
