Soyuz TMA-5 is the mission name for the flight of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS) . It was the ninth visit by a Soyuz spacecraft to the ISS and the 115th flight in the Soyuz program.

Mission overview

Soyuz TMA-5 launch

This flight was a crew exchange mission to the ISS and the 25th manned flight to this station. Expedition 9 , which was working on the space station, was replaced by the crew of Expedition 10 . It consisted of the Russian cosmonaut Salischan Scharipow (commander) and the American Leroy Chiao (flight engineer). In addition, the cosmonaut Yuri Shargin flew with him, who returned to Earth on October 24, 2004 with the Soyuz TMA-4 landing capsule after a short stay at the station of almost eight days .

The launch took place at a carrier rocket of the type Soyuz-FG from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on October 14, 2004 at 3:06:00 pm UTC .

The two spacemen Sharipov and Chiao worked as the 10th permanent crew on the ISS and carried out scientific experiments. They also received a visit from two Progress space transporters.
