Yuri Shargin Georgijewitsch ( Russian Юрий Георгиевич Шаргин ., Scientific transliteration Jurij Georgievic Sargın * 20th March 1960 in Engels , Oblast Saratov , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian cosmonaut .

Shargin graduated from the Military Aerospace Engineering Academy in Leningrad . He is a lieutenant colonel in the Russian space forces .

Shargin was selected as a cosmonaut on February 9, 1996. In 2004 he was selected to fly to the International Space Station as a flight engineer on board the Soyuz TMA-5 . He was the first Russian cosmonaut with a (secret) military mission on the ISS.

He is divorced and has two children.
