Kosmos 638 is the code name for an unmanned flight of the Soviet spaceship Soyuz that started on April 3, 1974 . It was customary in the Soviet Union to give official names only to successful missions. Failed flights were mostly not announced at all and test flights were only announced under the general cover name Kosmos. It was the 25th flight in the Soviet Soyuz program.
Mission overview
This was the first flight in preparation for the joint Apollo-Soyuz project with NASA . Instead of the standard coupling system, the spaceship had a modified system, called APAS-75, in order to be able to dock on the connection module APDS ( Androgynous Peripheral Docking System ). The spaceship was also fitted with two solar panels.
