crew
Starting crew
- Oleg Wiktorowitsch Novizki (2nd space flight), Commander ( Russia / Roscosmos )
- Peggy Whitson (3rd space flight), flight engineer ( USA / NASA )
- Thomas Pesquet (1st spaceflight), flight engineer ( France / ESA )
Substitute team
- Fyodor Nikolajewitsch Yurtschichin (5th space flight), Commander (Russia / Roscosmos)
- Jack Fischer (1st spaceflight), flight engineer (USA / NASA)
- Paolo Nespoli (3rd space flight), flight engineer ( Italy / ESA )
Return crew
Peggy Whitson did not fly back with Nowizki and Pesquet, but stayed on board the ISS and spent three more months there as a member of ISS Expedition 52 . She returned with Soyuz MS-04 .
Mission description
The mission brought three crew members from ISS expeditions 50 and 51 to the International Space Station.
It was the third deployment of the further developed Soyuz MS spaceship. This differs from the previous version, among other things, in the new course-NA approach and coupling system.
The rendezvous with the ISS took again as in the two previous flights two days instead of the usual last six hours. The reason was a not yet operational "Klion-R" ground control station in Vostochny , which is required for the fast four-orbit approach of the new MS spacecraft.
The undocking finally took place on June 2, 2017 at 10:47 UTC, and the ISS Expedition 52 began on the station with Fyodor Yurtschichin as commander. The landing took place on the same day at 14:10 UTC 147 km southeast of Scheskasgan in the Kazakh steppe .
