Mathilde Grünewald (born November 13, 1947 in Göttingen ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist .

Life

Mathilde Grünewald attended the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Göttingen until 1966 . After graduating from high school, she first studied Classical Archeology at the University of Göttingen , then moved to the University of Vienna , which had just established a chair for Provincial Roman Archeology . She received her doctorate in 1975 with a thesis on "Late antique mansions in the north-western provinces of the Roman Empire and their social background".

From 1969 to 1980 she worked as a freelancer for the Limes Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences during the excavations in the Carnuntum legion camp . From 1980 to 2012 she was director of the Museum of the City of Worms in the Andreasstift . In Worms and its surroundings led them through between 1980 and 1990 numerous excavations.

Since 2013 she has been working for the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in Mannheim as a consultant for provincial Roman archeology, where she curated the exhibition “A Touch of Rome”. Most recently she worked on the excavation in the Roman villa rustica of Oftersheim near Schwetzingen . The main house was cut, a cellar and two heated rooms are proven. Around AD 260 the building was demolished and literally deconstructed. After that, the owner had a large post structure built, which was probably not completed. Two wall systems were able to be reconstructed from the numerous fragments of excellent ancient wall paintings.

For local communities in Rheinhessen such as Hochborn , the highest village on the Kloppberg plateau, and the neighboring Hangen-Weisheim on hillside terraces , she created local chronicles. For this purpose, all documents, from archaeological finds to the village archives, parish registers, registry office files and other sources were evaluated.

In 2018 she presented the four Kurmainzer court regulations in two articles. The order of 1613 was previously unknown.

Another focus of her scientific work is cooking from antiquity to early modern times. Mathilde Grünewald researched food preparation as well as historical eating and drinking habits. She has set up and cooked selected historical recipes for today's kitchen. These recipes have been published in various publications, including their Nibelungen cookbook, which is dedicated to the Middle Ages, as well as in the volume Schmausende Domherren or How Politics is on the Table - Mainzer Menus 1545 and 1546 .

Mathilde Grünewald lives in Worms. She was married to the photographer Klaus Baranenko , whose pictures have found their way into many of her publications.
