Thomas Gautier Pesquet (born February 27, 1978 in Rouen ) is a French astronaut and member of the European Astronaut Corps .

training

After the baccalaureate 1996 in Dieppe at the Lycée Ango and a preparatory study at the Lycée Pierre-Corneille in his hometown of Rouen Pesquet began studies in mechanics for space systems and spacecraft at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace in Toulouse . In 2001 he finished his studies with a master’s degree . His studies also included a year abroad at the École polytechnique de Montréal in Canada.

Professional career

After an internship at Thales Alenia Space in Cannes , Pesquet began his professional career in 2001 as a Spacecraft Dynamics Engineer at GMV in Madrid , Spain .

From 2002 to 2004 he worked as a research engineer at the French center for space research CNES and worked as its representative on the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS). In 2004 the enthusiastic private pilot was selected for flight training by Air France . He received his license in 2006 and has since been flying, among other things, the Airbus A320 for the French airline. Pesquet also qualified as a Type Rating Instructor for the A320 and as a Crew Resource Management Instructor.

Astronaut activity

Pesquet was able to prevail in the ESA selection process against 8413 other applicants and was presented to the public on May 20, 2009 as one of six new astronauts. Thomas Pesquet began his training at the European Astronaut Center (EAC) in Cologne at the beginning of September 2009. The official completion of the basic training and the appointment as an astronaut took place on November 22, 2010 at an official ceremony at the EAC in Cologne.

After completing his astronaut training, Pesquet took on tasks at the European Space Flight Control Center in Darmstadt and at the European Astronaut Center in Cologne. This includes communication with astronauts on the International Space Station and the preparation of future space projects. In addition, Pesquet continued to prepare for his upcoming space mission through training sessions in Europe, Russia and the USA .

On the Soyuz TMA-18M flight , Pesquet was a substitute for his Danish colleague Andreas Mogensen .

On March 17, 2014, Pesquet was officially assigned to a long-term mission aboard the ISS. The start with Soyuz MS-03 for ISS expeditions 50 and 51 took place on November 17, 2016. “During his mission, an atomic clock will be installed on the space station , which, in conjunction with other atomic clocks on Earth, will check Einstein's theory of relativity and even more precise time measurements should enable. The results from this could double the accuracy of satellite navigation and thus contribute to a more precise position determination on earth. ”The return to earth took place on June 2, 2017. The mission from Pesquet was called Proxima .

Pesquet is a member of the French Aeronautics and Astronautics Association (3AF) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

On July 28, 2020, Pesquet was officially assigned for his second long-term mission aboard the ISS. The SpaceX Crew-2 flight is scheduled to take off with a Crew Dragon in the spring of 2021 at the Kennedy Space Center LC-39A. Pesquet's second mission will be called Alpha . During this mission he will take over the ISS command post for a month .

Due to his public profile as an astronaut, Pesquet was appointed in April 2021 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as their so-called “Goodwill Ambassador”.

Private

His hobbies include jogging , swimming , squash , diving , playing the saxophone , paragliding, as well as skydiving and judo . He has the black belt in this sport. In addition to his native French , he speaks English , German , Spanish , Russian and Chinese . He is in a relationship with the agricultural scientist Anne Mottet.
