Fischer and Yurchichin entering Soyuz MS-04

Jack David "2fish" Fischer (born January 23, 1974 in Louisville , Colorado ) is a former American astronaut . From April to September 2017 he worked as a flight engineer for ISS expeditions 51 and 52 on the International Space Station .

education

Fischer was born in Louisville, Colorado in 1974. In 1992 he graduated from Centaurus High School in Lafayette, Colorado and then moved to the United States Air Force Academy , where he completed his bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering in 1996 . Two years later, Fischer did his Masters at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

Fischer reached the rank of colonel in the US Air Force . After September 11, 2001, he completed two combat missions in Asia and was also part of two operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2004 he graduated from the US Air Force Test Pilot School.

In 2006 he briefly returned to his work as a test pilot . At Edwards Air Force Base he tested the then newly introduced F-22 Raptor . In 2008 he was selected as a strategist for the Department of Defense in Washington, DC . Before he was selected as an astronaut, he worked in various positions at the Pentagon . During his time with the Air Force, Colonel Fischer recorded over 3,000 hours of flight time in more than 45 different types of aircraft.

Astronaut activity

Fischer was elected to NASA's 20th astronaut group on June 29, 2009. He completed his basic training in June 2011. Before being nominated for a long-term stay on board the international space station ISS , he worked as a Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM) Soyuz, in the organization and operation of the ISS and in the field of future research in space at NASA .

He originally received his first mission as a flight engineer for Expeditions 52/53 . In the summer of 2016, however, NASA adjusted its mission plan, which is why Fischer was newly designated for mission 51/52.

On April 20, 2017, Fischer took off from the Baikonur spaceport on his first mission. As the flight engineer of the Soyuz MS-04 spacecraft , he flew to the ISS together with Fyodor Yurtschichin . The capsule docked with the ISS around six hours after take-off. Yurtschichin and Fischer were thus the first mission to get to the space station on board a Soyuz MS space capsule in just six hours instead of the previously usual two days. Fischer worked on board the station as a flight engineer for ISS expeditions 51 and 52 . The return took place on September 3, 2017.

Fischer left NASA on May 31, 2018 and went to the US Air Force's Air Force Space Command .

Private

Fischer is married and has two daughters. He lives with his family in Houston , Texas . He is considered a big fan of the Denver Broncos and was selected, among other things, in 2016 to represent the club at the season finale.
