Ernst August Papst (born May 31, 1843 in Aue ; † November 14, 1921 there ) was a German manufacturer in the city of Aue. In 1913 he became an honorary citizen of the city.

Life

After attending school and (probably) training in a metal trade, Ernst Papst started his own business in 1872. He began manufacturing household appliances such as sieves, bowls and the like, and washing and wringing machines soon followed. Eventually he switched to the production of spools for the cloth making industry, and the first wooden specimens soon turned into spools made of tin-plated sheet metal.

Papst had recognized the dangers of fires in his production areas and in 1870 ensured that a volunteer fire brigade was founded within a gymnastics club to quickly combat damage. That was the basis for the development of extinguishing in Aue.

Because of the rapidly increasing demand for his products and the machines that go with them, Pope himself became a manufacturer of equipment for the textile industry . In 1872 he founded the sheet metal coil and metal tube factory and soon began delivering not only within Germany but also to other European countries.

In accordance with its importance for the economic rise of Aue, the city fathers granted him honorary citizenship in 1913 .
