Fyodor Nikolajewitsch Yurtschichin ( Russian Фёдор Николаевич Юрчихин ; born January 3, 1959 in Batumi , Ajarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , Georgian SSR ) is a former Russian cosmonaut .

education

After graduating from high school in Batumi in 1976, Yurchikhin began studying at the Moscow State Aviation Institute . He graduated in 1983 with a degree in mechanical engineering specializing in spacecraft. In 2001 he received his PhD in business administration from the Moscow State Administrative University.

From 1983 to 1997 he worked for the Russian space company RKK Energija . He worked in the control center, first as an engineer, then as a senior engineer, and finally as a senior engineer. Eventually he became the chief engineer for the Mir Space Shuttle and NASA Mir programs.

Cosmonaut activity

In August 1997, Yurchikhin was enrolled as a candidate in the cosmonaut department of RKK Energija. From January 1998 to November 1999 he completed a basic training course and passed an examination as a test cosmonaut. From January 2000 he began to train in the test cosmonaut group for the ISS program.

In October 2002, Yurchikhin flew into space on the space shuttle Atlantis as part of the STS-112 mission. After completing his first space flight, he had spent 10 days, 19 hours and 58 minutes in space.

On May 7, 2006, he was selected for the Soyuz TMA-10 crew . As a Soyuz flight engineer, he started for the ISS on April 7, 2007. There he worked as a station commander for a total of 196 days. The landing on October 21, 2007 in the Kazakh steppe was not entirely problem-free, as the landing point was probably a few hundred kilometers to the west than expected due to a computer error.

In October 2009, the ISS crews for Expeditions 23 to 27 were rescheduled, as a result of which Yurtschichin was nominated as ISS flight engineer for Expeditions 24 and 25 . He was the commander of the Soyuz TMA-19 spacecraft and lived and worked aboard the ISS from June to November 2010. It took off on June 15, 2010 and landed on November 26, 2010.

From May 29, 2013, Yurchikhin spent his fourth stay in space. He was in command of the Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft and stayed on board the ISS for six months. On September 10, 2013, he took over command of the ISS as part of ISS Expedition 37 , and returned to Earth on November 11, 2013.

On April 20, 2017, Yurchikhin took off on its fifth space flight. Together with the American Jack Fischer , he flew to the ISS in the Soyuz MS-04 spacecraft . There he initially worked as a flight engineer for ISS Expedition 51 . On June 2, he took command of ISS Expedition 52 . The landing took place on September 3, 2017.
