ISS Expedition 59 is the mission name for the 59th long-term crew of the International Space Station (ISS). The mission began with the docking of the Soyuz MS-12 spacecraft on the ISS on March 15, 2019 and ended with the disengagement of Soyuz MS-11 on June 24, 2019.

Arrived at the beginning of Expedition 59:

Instead of Ovchinin and Hague, Oleg Skripotschka was originally supposed to strengthen the expedition. However, since Ovchinin and Hague did not get to the ISS due to the false start of Soyuz MS-10 , they were assigned to flight Soyuz MS-12 instead, so that Skripotschka could only fly with Soyuz MS-15 later .

Substitute team

The replacement crew of the ISS expedition was recruited from the backup crews of the two Soyuz feeder spaceships, with Alexander Skvortsov both times due to special circumstances . Luca Parmitano and Andrew Morgan acted. All three then flew to the ISS with Soyuz MS-13 themselves.

Mission description

Crew recording on March 15, 2019

Due to the false start of the Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft in October 2018, three space travelers and their return ship were missing from the ISS. Expedition 59 could not begin with the docking of Soyuz MS-11 - as originally planned - and was instead brought forward to docking with Soyuz MS-12 in order to reach the target strength of a six-person crew as soon as possible. The feeder ship reached the ISS after a six-hour flight and brought Alexei Ovchinin, Tyler Hague and Christina Koch on board. Together with Oleg Kononenko, David Saint-Jacques and Anne McClain, they formed the crew of Expedition 59.

Shortly before Soyuz MS-11 undocked with Kononenko, Saint-Jacques and McClain, Ovchinin took over command of the ISS.

Freight traffic

On April 4 at 14:22 UTC, Progress docked MS-11 with the Pirs module. The freighter remained connected to the ISS for four months before being decoupled when laden with waste at the end of July 2019 and burned up over the South Pacific.

On April 19, Anne McClain and David Saint-Jacques used the Canadarm2 gripper arm and captured the cargo spaceship Cygnus NG-11 (called "SS Roger Chaffee "). Cygnus was rotated by commands from the ground station and coupled to the underside of the Unity module .

External works

Nick Hague on his first spacewalk

On March 22nd, Nick Hague and Anne McClain installed adapters for the new lithium-ion batteries as part of an EVA , with which the upgrade of the electronic system is to be completed. They exchanged three old nickel-hydrogen batteries for the new lithium-ion batteries.

Christina Koch on the second outboard mission

On March 29th, Nick Hague left the station again, this time accompanied by Christina Koch. They exchanged three more nickel-hydrogen batteries for new lithium-ion batteries. Originally, Anne McClain was supposed to take part in this EVA. However, it did not fit the designated spacesuit. Nick Hague stood in for them.

David Saint-Jacques on his third spacecraft mission

On April 8, Anne McClain and David Saint-Jacques made the mission's third spacecraft. They replace a defective lithium-ion battery, installed a redundant power supply for Canadarm2 and attached bolts to attach the experiment to the Columbus room laboratory .

On April 29, Oleg Kononenko and Alexei Ovchinin made the mission's fourth spacecraft. They carried out maintenance work and carried out experiments.
