Oleg Dmitrijewitsch Kononenko ( Russian Олег Дмитриевич Кононенко ; born June 21, 1964 in Turkmenabat , Turkmen SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian cosmonaut . He is the holder of the state award "Hero of Turkmenistan".
Cosmonaut career
ISS expedition 9
In early 2002 Kononenko was nominated as a flight engineer for ISS Expedition 9 . In addition to Kononenko, Gennadi Padalka was to fly as the commander and Mike Fincke as the flight engineer. After the Columbia accident in February 2003, the crew strength of the ISS was reduced to two people for reasons of supply. This had an impact on all teams appointed up to that point. When the flight finally took off in April 2004, Kononenko was not there.
ISS expedition 17
Kononenko worked from April to October 2008 as a flight engineer for Expedition 17 on the International Space Station .
ISS expedition 30/31
In October 2009 Kononenko was nominated for a long stay aboard the ISS. He worked as a flight engineer for ISS Expedition 30 since December 2011 and took over command of ISS Expedition 31 from the end of April 2012 . The landing was on July 1, 2012.
ISS expedition 44/45
In October 2012 Kononenko was nominated for a long-term stay aboard the ISS. On July 22, 2015, he flew to the ISS as commander of the Soyuz TMA-17M spacecraft together with the Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui and the American astronaut Kjell Lindgren . There he worked until December 11, 2015 as a flight engineer for Expeditions 44 and 45 .
Further career at Roskosmos
On November 10, 2016, Kononenko was appointed commander of the cosmonaut corps by the head of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center , Yuri Lonchakov .
ISS expedition 57-59
On December 3, 2018, Kononenko began his fourth mission. As the commander of the Soyuz MS-11 spacecraft , he flew to the ISS with the American Anne McClain and the Canadian David Saint-Jacques and worked briefly as a flight engineer for the ISS expedition 57 . On December 20, 2018, he took command of Expeditions 58 and 59 . The return to earth with McClain and Saint-Jacques took place on June 25, 2019.
Private
Kononenko grew up in a simple family. His father worked as a driver in a haulage company, his mother as a switchboard operator at an airport. Kononenko studied at a technical college for volleyball and was a member of the youth team of Turkmenistan.
Kononenko is married and has two children. Like many cosmonauts, he is a radio amateur , his amateur radio call sign is RN3DX.
