William Surles "Bill" McArthur, Jr. (born July 26, 1951 in Laurinburg , North Carolina , USA ) is a former American astronaut .

Life

McArthur graduated from high school in 1969 and then studied applied science and engineering at the United States Military Academy at West Point . After completing his Bachelor's degree in the summer of 1973, he served two years at the Fort Bragg Army base .

In 1975 McArthur received pilot training at the Army Aviation Flight School, which he graduated from the top of his class in June 1976. For the next two years he was part of the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea and served as the head of an air reconnaissance squadron and as a flight brigade commander. In 1978 he returned to his homeland and joined a battalion in Georgia . There he led a platoon and was an operations officer.

William McArthur then enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology, studying aerospace engineering . In 1983 he earned a master's degree and returned to West Point as an assistant professor. He taught at the United States Military Academy's Department of Mechanics for three years before moving to Maryland . At the Patuxent River Naval Base, he was trained as a test pilot at the United States Naval Test Pilot School.

Immediately after obtaining his test pilot license, McArthur found a job with NASA in August 1987 . He worked as a test engineer at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) for the space shuttle launch and landing phases .

After retiring from the astronaut squad, he worked at JSC as Director of Security and Mission Insurance until he left NASA on June 24, 2017.

Astronaut activity

In January 1990, McArthur was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate and completed the one-year training as a mission specialist in July 1991. His first flight was in 1993 when he was participating in the STS-58 mission . He then took part in missions STS-74 in 1995 and STS-92 in 2000.

On October 1, 2005, he took off with Soyuz TMA-7 to the International Space Station , where he spent 12,187 days as part of the expedition .
