Borys Paton Jewhenowytsch ( Ukrainian Борис Євгенович Патон , Russian Борис Евгеньевич Патон * 27. November 1918 in Kiev , Ukrainian State ; † 19th August 2020 ) was a Ukrainian scientist , specialist in the field of electric welding and president of the National Academy of Sciences Ukraine .

Paton's father Yevgeny Oskarowitsch Paton (1870–1953) was the inventor of arc welding and an engineer for bridge construction. In 1941 Paton graduated from the Kiev Polytechnic Institute and worked for a year at the "Krasnoye Sormowo" plant in Gorky and then at the Institute for Electrofusion of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Kiev, which his father directed . After the death of his father, Paton took over the post of director of the institute, which is now named after his father. In 1962 he was also elected President of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR . At the same time he became a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Paton was awarded the Stalin and Lenin Prize , among others . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin four times and twice the title Hero of Socialist Labor . He was also a holder of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland 2nd and 1st class and the Order of Freedom of Ukraine . Borys Paton was the first holder of the title Hero of Ukraine .

In 1967 Paton was awarded the Bronze Patriotic Order of Merit in the GDR . From 1980 he was an external member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR until its dissolution in 1992. The asteroid of the middle main belt (2727) Paton is named after him and his father Evgeni Paton. He died at the age of 101 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
