The title Hero of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Герой України ) is the highest honor that can be bestowed by the Ukrainian state. The title was introduced by Decree No. 944/1998 of August 23, 1998 on the 7th anniversary of Ukraine's independence by President Leonid Kuchma and is awarded to citizens of Ukraine for heroism (Golden Star) or for great achievements (State Prize) .

Similar titles based on the model of the Soviet order Hero of the Soviet Union exist in many Eastern European countries.

People who have been awarded the title “Hero of Ukraine” for performing an outstanding heroic deed (Golden Star) receive (or, if deceased, their family members) a one-time lump-sum payment of 50 times the subsistence level for employable people.

Borys Paton was the first to receive this title in 1998. Following a change in the law, on June 13, 2017, the Belarusian Mikhail Schysneuski was the first foreigner to be posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine .

By August 2020, a total of 466 citizens (432 men and 34 women, 181 posthumously) had been awarded the title “Hero of Ukraine”, of which 203 received the Golden Star .

Under President Leonid Kuchma 132 citizens were awarded, under Viktor Yushchenko 114, Viktor Yanukovych awarded the title 40 times, under President Petro Poroshenko the title was awarded 163 times and under Volodymyr Zelenskyj 17 people have been awarded to date.
