Volodymyr Mychajlowytsch Iwasjuk ( Ukrainian Володимир Михайлович Івасюк ; born March 4, 1949 in Kizman , Chernivtsi Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ; † May 18, 1979 in Brjuchowytschi , Lviv Oblast , Ukrainian composer, Ukrainian composer and composer of the Ukrainian SSR) was a singer .

Volodymyr Iwasjuk wrote 53 instrumental works and 107 songs, the most famous of which is Tscherwona ruta ( Червона рута ) from 1968, which was sung by Sofija Rotaru in 1971 as a hit.

On May 18, 1979 he was found hanged in the forest of Brjuchowytschi near Lviv . Iwasyuk was buried in the Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv. According to information from the authorities at the time, he committed suicide, and according to findings from 2015, he was murdered by the KGB .

Honors

In 1999 the Ukrainian Post issued a postage stamp in memory of Volodymyr Ivazyuk and in 2009 the Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin with his likeness. In 1994 he was posthumously awarded the Taras Shevchenko Prize and in 2009 the title Hero of Ukraine .
