Ihor Rafajilowytsch Juchnowskyj (born September 1, 1925 in Knjahynyne , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Soviet - Ukrainian scientist , politician and statesman .

Youth and Military Service

To the world Juchnowskyj came as a child of a working class family on September 1, 1925 at the village Knjahnyne ( Княгинине ) in Rajon Demydivka of Rivne Oblast in the Socialist Soviet Ukraine . He graduated from high school in Kremenez in 1944 . In 1944 he was drafted into the Red Army and served in the German-Soviet war in Ukraine, Poland and Austria.

Scientific career

In 1946 he began studying physics and mathematics at the Ivan Franko National University in Lviv , graduating with distinction in 1951. In the same year he became head of the theoretical physics department at Lviv University . In 1969, as a doctor of physics and mathematics, he became head of the newly established department of statistical theory of condensed matter . Juchnowskyj is the author of over 430 scientific articles, 7 monographs and textbooks.

Political career

Juchnowskyj was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine . From 1990 to 2006 he was a member of the Verkhovna Rada , the Ukrainian parliament. In the first presidential election in Ukraine in 1991 , Juchnowskyj ran as a presidential candidate, but only achieved 1.74% of the vote. From March 6, 1992 to October 27, 1992, under President Leonid Kravchuk , he was head of the State Duma of Ukraine , the predecessor institution of today's Presidential Office of Ukraine, and from October 27, 1992 to March 17, 1993 he was first deputy in the Kuchma cabinet Prime Minister of Ukraine.

Private

Juchnowskyj is married, has two children (born 1952 and 1957) and speaks Ukrainian, Polish, English and German.

Honors

In 1985 Juchnowskyj received the Order of the Red Labor Banner . He is a member of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and an honorary doctorate from the Institute of Theoretical Physics Boholjubova in Kiev . The Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko awarded Ihor Juchnowskyj the title Hero of Ukraine on August 23, 2005 . He is also a holder of the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise V and IV Class. On December 1st, 2016 he was awarded the highest order in Ukraine, the Order of Freedom .
