Petro Balabuyev
Petro Vasyljowytsch Balabujev ( Ukrainian Петро Васильович Балабуєв , scientific transliteration Petro Vasyl'ovyč Balabujev ; born March 23, 1931 in Walujske , Luhansk Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ; † May 17, 2007 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian aircraft constructor
Life
Balabuyev received his doctorate in 1988 as a "Doctor of Technical Sciences". He was later professor and head of the aircraft construction faculty at the University of Aerospace " NJ Zhukovsky " in Kharkiv . He has published more than 100 scientific papers and registered over 20 important patents, particularly those relating to the aircraft An-22 , An-74 , An-124 and An-225 .
From 1984 to 2005 Balabuyev was the leading designer of the scientific-technical complex for aviation " OK Antonov " in Kiev . He was responsible for the development of the world's largest cargo aircraft, the An-225, and also developed the An-32 , An-72 , An-74, and An-124 aircraft . He was also busy developing the newer types An-3 and An-140 . In February 2007 he signed an agreement to develop the An-148 passenger aircraft .
Balabuyev was honored with the highest honor "Venerable Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine". In addition to many other national and international awards, he was the winner of the State Prize of Ukraine (1996), the “ Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation” (1998) and the Ukrainian State Order “ Hero of Ukraine ” (1999). In 2001 he received the 35th Edward Warner Medal , the world's highest award in civil aviation, from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). He was chairman of the board of directors of the "International Consortium Medium Transport Plane". Balabuyev died in Kiev at the age of 76 and was buried in the Berkovetsky Cemetery.
