biography

Johnson started rapping in the late 1980s. He then founded the duo Mobb Deep with Havoc , whom Prodigy met at the High School of Art and Design in New York City. Prodigy took on the role of the rapper at the beginning, while Havoc produced the music. In April 1993, the group released their debut album Juvenile Hell on the Fourth And Broadway Records label . The Infamous followed two years later via Loud Records . The Infamous helped the group to their breakthrough and is considered one of the most influential albums of the East Coast rap.

Prodigy's first solo album was released in November 2000. After he had already recorded four albums with his partner Havoc as Mobb Deep by this time, he wanted to take time out to work on his solo project. The album was released under the title HNIC . It was released by Relativity Records and was produced by Bink !, Hangmen 3, The Alchemist , Robert Kirkland, Havoc, Ez Elpee, Rockwilder , Just Blaze and Ric Rude. HNIC achieved gold status . The tracks Keep It Thoro , Rock Dat Shit and YBE were released as singles.

After the singles Mac 10 Handle and New York Shit had already appeared in 2006 , Prodigy released his second long player Return of the Mac in March 2007 . This was produced exclusively by The Alchemist. Return of the Mac is a mixtape and entered the US Billboard 200 at number 32 with 26,000 records sold in the first week. It was released on the Koch Records label . The songs Stuck To You and 7th Heaven were released as further singles in 2007 . The track Stuck To You was released in the summer of 2005 via the German hip-hop tape label OnTheMix Records . The March issue of hip-hop magazine Juice was the cover story of Prodigy and The Alchemist .

On October 10, 2007, Prodigy was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. The police stopped the rapper after an unauthorized U-turn and while searching his car they found a gun for which he was not permitted. The rapper started his sentence in spring 2008. Prodigy previously released his album HNIC Pt. 2 , mostly produced by The Alchemist . The album was released on April 22, 2008 and reached number 36 on the Billboard charts. On November 4, 2008 the album was released under the title HNIC Pt. 2: The Ultimate Collectors Edition re-released. This includes eight more songs, a bandana labeled “ Free P ” and a DVD with videos for all the pieces. After serving his sentence, Prodigy was released from prison on March 7, 2011.

The rapper died of a swallowed egg in a hospital on June 20, 2017. He had been treated there for sickle cell anemia which he had suffered from since birth.
