Pavlo Archypowytsch Sahrebelnyj (born August 25, 1924 in Soloschyne , Poltava Governorate , Ukrainian SSR ; † February 3, 2009 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian writer .
Life
Pavlo Sahrebelnyj joined a volunteer corps of the Red Army at the age of seventeen , studied at the military academy and fought in the defense of Kiev in World War II . He was injured in 1941 and seriously injured again after serving at the front in 1942. In 1945 he became a German prisoner of war and was interned in a concentration camp. After his liberation he worked in the Soviet military mission in West Germany and wrote his first works. After the end of the war he first returned to his home village. From 1946 to 1951 he studied at the Philological Faculty of the University of Dnipropetrovsk and initially worked for the regional newspaper in Dnipropetrovsk . In Kiev he was then editor of the magazine "Heimat" and from 1961 to 1963 editor of "Literatur der Ukraine" (Literaturna Ukrajina). In 1964 he became secretary of the Ukrainian Writers 'Union and from 1979 to 1986 he was chairman of the Ukrainian Writers' Union. He wrote short stories and novels about World War II, as well as historical and psychological novels. One of his best-known works is the novel Roksolana , published in 1980 , about Roxelane , a wife of the Ottoman Sultan Suleyman I. His novel Jewropa 45 (Європа 45) he presented in what was then West Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy.
In 1974 he received the State Prize of Ukraine ; 1980 the State Prize of the USSR . On August 25, 2004, he was named Hero of Ukraine .
