Roman Iwanowytsch Iwanytschuk ( Ukrainian Роман Іванович Іваничук ; born May 27, 1929 in Tratsch , Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ; † September 17, 2016 in Lviv , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian writer, journalist and politician.

Life

Roman Ivanychuk was born in the village of Tratsch in the east of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. His father was a village school teacher and an admirer of the nearby-born writer Vasyl Stefanyk , who thus became Ivanychuk's first literary mentor. He attended high school in Kolomyja and began studying at Lviv University in 1947 , but was expelled from the university in 1949 for "anti-Soviet activity" and then served in the Soviet Army for three years . In 1953 he was allowed to continue his studies and in 1957 he graduated from the Faculty of Philology of Lviv University. Following his studies, he taught Ukrainian language and literature at a school in Shchyrez in the Pustomyty district of Lviv Oblast .

His first novel was published in 1954 and his first collection of short stories was published in 1958. From 1960 he was a member of the National Association of Writers of Ukraine . In 1961 he did a journalism internship with the army and moved to Lviv, where he worked from 1963 to 1990 for the magazine "Oktober" as the person responsible for prose. Between 1990 and 1994 Ivanychuk was a member of the Verkhovna Rada , the Ukrainian parliament, and since 1994 he has been a professor at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

He died at the age of 87 in Lviv and was buried there on September 19, 2016 in the Lychakiv Cemetery .

Roman Ivanytschuk was the author of 60 books including numerous collections of short stories and novellas and about 15 historical novels. His books have been translated into French and Russian, among others.
