The Evangelical Lutheran Deanery Weilheim is one of the seven deaneries of the Munich and Upper Bavaria church district of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria . It has been around since the 19th century. Jörg Hammerbacher, who has been elected dean as the successor to Axel Piper, who has been regional bishop in the Augsburg church district since January 1, 2019, is to take up his office on July 1, 2019.

Geography and history

The dean's district Weilheim is quite large and includes parishes in the districts of Weilheim , Landsberg am Lech , Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the district of Schongau .

It comprises 17 parishes with 53,000 parishioners from the north shore of Lake Starnberg ( Berg and Starnberg ) to Mittenwald , from Kaufering and Landsberg to Penzberg . The Protestant congregations are located in places that are shaped by the mining tradition, but also by bio-high technology. There are arts and crafts. Many historical and scenic beauties attract tourists. The evangelicals are made up of children who go to camps, commuters to Munich and those who are now spending their retirement years in their former vacation spots; so they are very complex. And you can hear Upper Bavarian, Transylvanian-Saxon, Swabian, Franconian, Rhineland and other dialects in the communities.

The communities are large in area and number. Those places that have grown up through immigration do not know any old traditions. In order to support the parishes of the dean's office in their work, the dean's office includes other social institutions: an adult education center, a diaconal work with advice centers, a youth service and an administrative center.
