history

The first evangelical citizen of Munich

Compared to other cities, the history of the Evangelical Church in Munich is rather short: the first Protestant groups at the beginning of the 16th century were banned and suppressed. It was not until 1801 that the first Protestant, a wine and horse trader from Mannheim , received civil rights in the royal seat of Munich. In the following years more and more Protestant citizens settled in Munich due to the liberal politics of Max I. Joseph : in 1827 there were already 4500 parishioners. The first organizational formation (as the dean's office for the Isar district) took place in 1808.

First ev.-luth. Church building in Munich

In 1833 the first Protestant church, later named St. Matthew , was consecrated on Sonnenstrasse . It was torn down by the National Socialists in 1938 and rebuilt on Sendlinger-Tor-Platz after the Second World War . The Reconciliation Church was consecrated in 1967 on the site of the former concentration camp in Dachau . The initiative for this project came from former Protestant prisoners, the dead as a reminder, the living as a duty.

Modern facilities

Since the 1970s, more and more inter-congregational institutions and advice centers have been established in the deanery district in order to be able to provide qualified support to people in the city of Munich; they are summarized in the Evangelical Services Munich (EDM). At the same time, partnerships with foreign churches were established and maintained. Today about 266,000 people who belong to the Protestant Church live in and around Munich, that is about 12% of the population.

The Dean's Office has been headed by Barbara Kittelberger since September 2004. She took over the office from her predecessor Hans Dieter Strack, who headed the Dean's Office from December 2000 until his retirement in May 2004.

Description of the largest deanery of the Bavarian regional church

Lukaskirche in Munich

The dean's district of Munich covers an area that roughly corresponds to the greater Munich area. It is part of the Munich-Upper Bavaria church district and the largest deanery district of the Bavarian regional church, which has a total of around 2.6 million church members.

The deanery district of Munich includes 67 parishes, which are regionally divided into six vice deans. Each vice dean's office is headed by a dean. Cross-community facilities and services, some of which are organized under their own legal entity, as well as special pastoral care areas (including hospital pastoral care and student pastoral care) support, supplement and relieve the work of the parishes. They work together in a conference led by the head of the Evangelical Services in Munich.

The highest committee of the deanery district is the deanery synod, to which full-time and honorary delegates belong. Under the chairmanship of the city dean, the dean's synod meets around ten times a year and decides on the central content and concepts of the church's work in Munich, as well as the budget, personnel matters and construction measures in the dean's district.

The city dean represents the deanery district in public and chairs the governing body, which includes the deans of the vice-deanery districts, the head of the evangelical services and the managing director of the parish office. The basis for work in the deanery district is laid down in a separate statute.

The administration of the deanery district takes place in the parish office. Around 60 employees work there in three departments under the direction of a manager. This is where the parish registers are kept, statistics are created, the finances are administered, construction projects are planned and implemented and the personnel records of the 1,400 full-time and part-time employees of the Protestant Church in Munich are looked after.
