history
The Augsburg church district was established in 1971, making it the youngest of the six Bavarian church districts. Nevertheless, the evangelicals can look back on a long history here. In the former imperial cities of Augsburg , Kaufbeuren , Kempten , Lindau , Memmingen and Nördlingen , in the areas around Memmingen, Neu-Ulm and in the Ries, as well as in individual former imperial knighthoods, the Protestant tradition goes back to the Reformation in the 16th century. Many Protestant communities were then founded in the course of industrialization and the construction of the railroad at the turn of the 20th century.
The expellees , many of them evangelical denomination , gave after the Second World War led to the foundation of other Protestant churches . This historical development is the reason for very different denominational relationships in Bavarian Swabia today. In the south, especially in the Allgäu , the Protestants are in a predominantly Catholic environment, whereas in the Ries , entire villages are often purely Protestant.
Guest and course chaplaincy plays an important role in church life in the Augsburg parish. Mountain worship services and other events are offered in numerous places, which are particularly aimed at the numerous holidaymakers and spa guests in the tourist centers.
