Axel Piper

Axel Piper (born February 21, 1959 in Essen ) is a German Lutheran clergyman. Since January 1, 2019, he has been regional bishop in the Augsburg church district of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria .

Piper, the son of a mining engineer, grew up in Munich and Lindau (Lake Constance) . He studied Protestant theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and after his ordination worked first in the school service, then at the Christ Church in Lindau. In 1996 he became a consultant for confirmation work and community education in the religious education center of the regional church in Heilsbronn . From 2003 to the end of 2018 he served as pastor at the Apostle Church in Weilheim and at the same time as dean of the Evangelical Lutheran deanery in Weilheim in Upper Bavaria . On January 13, 2019, Piper was officially introduced into his office as regional bishop for the evangelical church district of Augsburg and Swabia by the Bavarian regional bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm in the Augsburg Evangelical Church of St. Ulrich .

Since 2004 Piper has been the spokesman for the short devotions "Auf ein Wort" at Bayerischer Rundfunk .
