Walter Rupprecht

Walter Rupprecht (born May 7, 1918 in Wunsiedel ; † October 27, 2007 in Erlangen ) was a German Lutheran theologian and clergyman. Among other things, he worked as a professor for practical theology and regional bishop of the Augsburg church district .

Rupprecht was born the son of a pastor and the grandson of Eduard Rupprecht . He joined the Confessing Church in 1935 . In 1937 he graduated from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich . After labor service and military service, he studied theology at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen from 1945 .

From 1949 to 1956 Walter Rupprecht was pastor in Oberammergau . In 1956 he came as a lecturer at the pastoral college, which was then still connected to the Neuendettelsau University of Applied Sciences. In 1959 he received his doctorate in theology under Kurt Frör at the University of Erlangen. In 1960 he was appointed associate professor for Biblical Hermeneutics and Practical Theology at the Augustana University in Neuendettelsau , and in 1962 he became a professor for practical theology.

In 1967 Walter Rupprecht left the Augustana University and became dean at the St. Moritz Church in Coburg . During his time as dean in Coburg, a social welfare center was built, the Moritz church was renovated and a workshop for the disabled was set up in Ketschendorf .

In 1971 he was appointed to the newly founded church district of Augsburg as senior church councilor and was its first regional bishop. During his time in Augsburg he became a member of the Focolare Movement and campaigned for ecumenism . He headed the Augsburg church district until 1983.
