Dmytro Mychajlowytsch Hnatjuk even Dimitrij Gnatjuk or Dimitrij Mikhailovich Gnatjuk ( Ukrainian Дмитро Михайлович Гнатюк ; Russian Дмитрий Михайлович Гнатюк * 28. March 1925 in Starosillja , Romania ; † 29. April 2016 in Kiev ) was a Soviet-Ukrainian opera singer (baritone) .

Life

Since 1951 he has been a member of the troupe of the Taras Shevchenko Opera House in Kiev and was its artistic director and artistic director from 1988 to 2011. Hnatyuk received numerous prizes and awards, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1960 and the title of Hero of Socialist Labor in 1985 . In 1999 he became People's Artist of Ukraine and in 2005 Hero of Ukraine .

In addition to his artistic career, Hnatjuk was also politically active. From 1972 to 1984 he was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and from 1998 to 2002 a member of the Verkhovna Rada . He died in Kiev on April 29, 2016 and was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery on May 4, 2016 .
