Mamajiwzi ( Ukrainian Мамаївці ; Russian Мамаивцы Mamaiwzy , Romanian Mămăeşti , German Mamajestie ) is a village in the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernivtsi with about 5800 inhabitants (2004).
geography
The village is the administrative center of the district council of the same name within the Kizman district , which also includes the village of Novyj Kysseliw ( Новий Киселів ) with 250 inhabitants.
Mamajiwzi is located in northern Bukovina on the left bank of the Prut River and on the M 19 and N 10 highways, 13 km northwest of the Oblast capital Chernivtsi and 13 km southeast of the district center of Kizman . The closest settlement upstream is the urban-type Luzhany settlement .
The village has a train station on the Lviv – Chernivtsi railway line .
history
The village was first mentioned in writing in 1580. In 1722 the ataman of the Zaporozhian Cossacks Pylyp Orlyk passed through here.
Personalities
The Ukrainian opera singer Dmytro Hnatjuk was born on March 28, 1925 in the then Romanian village of Starosillja, which is now part of the village of Mamajiwzi.
