Maksym Mychajlowytsch Schapowal ( Ukrainian Максим Михайлович Шаповал ; born July 6, 1978 in Vinnytsia , Ukrainian SSR ; † June 27, 2017 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian colonel and head of the special forces of the main directorate of the intelligence service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. He was posthumously promoted to major general.

Life

Maksym Schapowal was born in Winnyzia as the son of a military pilot and after graduating from school he also embarked on a military career. Since the beginning of his officer career he served in the military secret service, most recently in the rank of colonel. Before the war in Ukraine he took part in peacekeeping operations. At the beginning of the war in Ukraine he was commissioned to protect the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine in the military area of ​​operations in Donetsk and Luhansk Oblast . In this role, he was involved in several battles, including the battle of Donetsk Airport , the liberation of several occupied Ukrainian cities, and the planning and implementation of reconnaissance attacks behind enemy lines.

Shapowal was killed by a car bomb in Solomyanka district of the Ukrainian capital Kiev on June 27, 2017 at around 8:10 a.m. The attack was classified as a terrorist act carried out by Russian special services. He was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery in Kiev .

Honors

Shapoval was posthumously appointed Major General by the President of Ukraine on June 30, 2017 and posthumously awarded the title " Hero of Ukraine " on September 7, 2017 . On December 6, 2018, a street in Kiev was named after a decision by the Kiev City Council.
