Levko Hryhorowytsch Lukyanenko (born August 24, 1928 in the village of Khrypivka , Horodnja district , Chernihiv Oblast , Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic ; † July 7, 2018 in Kiev ) was a Soviet dissident and civil rights activist , Ukrainian politician and diplomat .

Lukyanenko studied law at Moscow's Lomonosov University from 1953 to 1958 and became an active member of the Communist Party of Ukraine . From 1959, however, he became a dissident and civil rights activist, which is why he was sentenced to death in Lviv in 1961 . The sentence was later commuted to prison, which he served until 1975. Shortly after his release from prison, Mykola Rudenkos co-founded the Ukrainian Helsinki Group . In December 1977 he was arrested again for “anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda” and in July 1978 sentenced to 10 years in a camp with subsequent exile (to Tomsk Oblast ). On November 30, 1988, he was pardoned and released from exile. At the beginning of 1989 he returned to Ukraine.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union , he continued his political activities in the now independent Ukraine. Lukyanenko was one of the authors of Ukraine's Declaration of Independence and was a candidate for the first presidential election in Ukraine in 1991 . He reached third place in the election with 4.5% of the vote. He was several times (from May 15, 1990 to June 18, 1992, from February 9, 1995 to May 12, 1998 and from May 14, 2002 to June 15, 2007) for various parties a member of the Verkhovna Rada . From May 14, 1992 to October 15, 1993 Lukyanenko was Ukraine's ambassador to Canada .
Honors
On April 19, 2005, Levko Lukyanenko was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko . On November 22, 2007 he was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise Class V and in 2016 the Taras Shevchenko Prize . He has also received other official awards from Ukraine, has been a member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since 1991 and an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Alberta in Canada (since 1993). On December 1st, 2016 he was awarded the highest order in Ukraine, the Order of Freedom .
