Mykola Danylowytsch Rudenko (born December 19, 1920 in Jurivka , Luhansk Oblast , Ukraine , † April 1, 2004 in Kiev ) was a Soviet - Ukrainian dissident and human rights activist and author of poetry and prose .
Life
Rudenko fought as a soldier in the Red Army in World War II and was a member of the CPSU from 1938 , from which he was expelled in 1974 for criticizing Marxism . Between 1947 and 1950 he was editor of the literary magazine Dnipro . In November 1976 Rudenko was co-founder and head of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group . In February 1977 he was arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison and five years in exile for "anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda".
After his release from prison in 1987 he was allowed to leave the Soviet Union under pressure from democratic forces in the West and emigrated first to Germany and then to the United States . There he worked for Radio Free Europe and Voice of America . In 1988 his Soviet citizenship was revoked. On September 7, 1990, he returned to the now independent Ukraine and was rehabilitated. He died in Kiev in 2004 and was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery.
Honors
For his participation in the German-Soviet War he received the Order of the Red Star and the Order of the Great Patriotic War, 1st class. Mykola Rudenko was awarded the Taras Shevchenko Prize of Ukraine in 1993 for his novel "Orlov Strahl" . The Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma gave Mykola Rudenko on 19 December 2000 the title of Hero of Ukraine .
