Oleksandr Oleksijowytsch Schalimow (* 7 January July / 20 January  1918 greg. In Vwedenka , Ujesd Sadonski , Russian Empire ; † February 28, 2006 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Soviet- Ukrainian surgeon and one of the founders of the one named after him National Institute of Surgery and Transplantation OO Shalimov .

Life

Oleksandr Shalimov was born into a large farming family with eleven children who moved to Kuban ( Koschechabl Rajon ) in 1925 , where he went to school. From 1934 to 1936 he attended the Kuban Medical School, which he graduated with honors and then began studying medicine at the Kuban State Medical University in Krasnodar , which he finished in 1941. In September 1944 he became chief physician and head of the surgical department at the Baikal city hospital in Petrovsk-Sabaikalsky . From August 1959 he headed the chair for thoracic surgery and anesthesiology at the Medical University in Kharkiv and from May 1970 held the chair for surgery at the Kiev Institute for Further Education . From May 1971 Shalimov was director of the Research Institute for Hematology and Blood Transfusion in Kiev and from July 1972 he was director and since April 1988 Honorary Director of the Research Institute for Clinical and Experimental Surgery . At the same time he was the chief physician of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Shalimov has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since 1978 and of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine since 1993 , performed about 40,000 operations, is the author of over 830 scientific articles, including more than 30 monographs, and the creator of 112 inventions. He died in Kiev and is buried there in the Baikowe cemetery . In 2014, a monument was inaugurated in Kiev in honor of Shalimov.
