Jurij Anatolijowytsch Boiko (born October 9, 1958 in Horlivka , Donetsk Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian politician. He was Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine in the cabinet of Mykola Azarov from December 24, 2012 to February 27, 2014 .

Life

Boiko first completed a degree in chemical engineering in the 1980s and later earned a bachelor's degree in economics. After managing refineries and chemical plants in eastern Ukraine in the 1990s, he was appointed director of the state-owned company Naftohas and State Secretary at the same time in early 2002 . In 2003, the then Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych appointed him Deputy Minister for Fuel and Energy.

In this role, Boiko helped to establish the company RosUkrEnergo as an intermediary for the natural gas supplies that Ukraine receives from Russia and Central Asian countries. Since then he has been considered a key figure in the lucrative and politically sensitive natural gas deals between Ukraine and Russia. Boiko is also considered a close confidante of the entrepreneur Dmytro Firtash , who owns 45% of the shares in RosUkrEnergo.

After the Orange Revolution , Boiko was dismissed from office in early 2005. In August 2006 he was appointed Minister for Fuel and Energy by Yanukovych, who has now been reappointed to the post of Prime Minister. In this function, Boiko succeeded in reaching an agreement with Russia in autumn 2007 to secure natural gas supplies to Ukraine.

In the 2007 parliamentary election , Boiko was elected to the Verkhovna Rada . In December 2007 he lost his ministerial office. After Yanukovych's victory in the 2010 presidential election , he was reappointed Minister of Fuel and Energy on March 11, 2010. In the reshuffle of the cabinet after the parliamentary elections in December 2012 , Boiko was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. He was considered a close confidante of Yanukovych.

At the beginning of April 2014, Jurij Boiko was expelled from the Party of Regions along with Serhij Tihipko and Oleh Zarjow . He ran as an independent candidate in the Ukrainian presidential election in May 2014 and received 0.19% of the vote. In the Ukrainian parliamentary elections in October 2014, he was re-elected to head the opposition bloc.

At the beginning of 2015, Yuri Boiko, as the leader of the opposition bloc, proposed the stationing of UN peacekeeping forces in the separatist areas of eastern Ukraine ( DNR / LNR ) in order to guarantee the ceasefire there and to secure peace. At the beginning of February 2015 Boiko accused the ruling forces in Ukraine of having no interest in a peaceful solution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Instead, attempts would be made to silence those who campaigned for a peaceful solution.

In the 2019 presidential election in Ukraine , the candidate Boiko, who is considered to be pro-Russia, achieved fourth place in the first ballot on March 31, 2019 with 11.54% of the votes cast.

Boiko received the Ukrainian Order of Merit, Third Class , in May 2003 . In August 2004 he received the Order of Hero of Ukraine , the highest honor in the country.
