Oleh Anatolijowytsch Zarjow (born June 2, 1970 in Dnipropetrovsk , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian politician .

Life

Zaryov grew up near Dnipropetrovsk. His father worked as an engineer building rockets, his mother was a lecturer in chemistry. When he was 14 years old, he moved with his parents to Ternopil , where he graduated from school in 1987.

He then obtained a degree in electronic automation from the Moscow Engineering-Physical Institute (MIFI). After his return to Dnepropetrovsk he worked in the management of a computer company, then a paper mill.

From 2002 to 2014 he was a member of the Verkhovna Rada , the Ukrainian parliament, most recently as deputy group leader of the Party of Regions .

Zaryov is known for a pro-Russian position. On February 5, 2014, he declared that a US landing action had taken place in the west of the country and demanded that Russian tanks enter the country to defend against them. During the crisis in Ukraine in 2014 , he called for an amendment to the Ukrainian constitution towards a federal system and with great autonomy for the regions of Ukraine . He called on President Viktor Yanukovych to break up the demonstrations on the Maidan in Kiev by force.

In April 2014 he was expelled from the Party of Regions, he declared that he would run as an independent candidate in the presidential elections in May 2014 .

On April 14, 2014, Zaryov was attacked and beaten by a group of unknown people in Kiev after a TV broadcast. He then had to be treated in a clinic. He withdrew his presidential candidacy at the end of April 2014. On May 12, 2014, Zaryov was placed on the European Union's sanctions list. On June 3, 2014, he lost his parliamentary immunity and was written out for arrest. Since the end of June 2014, Zaryov has acted as "Parliamentary Chairman" of the "Union of the People's Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk" .

Zaryov is married and has four children. The fact that, despite his declared anti-Western stance, a son is studying at the university in the English city of Durham and a daughter is attending boarding school in Scotland was the subject of reporting in the Ukrainian media.
